Featured Artist Fridays: Chanakarn Semachai

Habits; cloud hugger, eyes closer, bone breaker, 2021

Chanakarn Semachai, also known as Punch, is a Thai artist who uses her work to explore identity and multiculturalism, which she explores in her whimsical clay sculptures. Her artwork is cartoon-like and reminiscent of childhood, with scenes that reflect the surreal and humorous nature of the everyday human experience.

After moving to the United States to pursue her MFA in ceramics, Punch found inspiration in the challenges of adapting to a new culture and learning to be true to herself in a new environment. She aims to create pieces that celebrate individuality and encourage people to embrace their unique qualities. With a focus on sculpture and functional ware, Punch’s work seeks to brighten people’s lives with art that celebrates the everyday.

Punch’s work has been recognized internationally, having exhibited in Thailand, Taiwan, Germany, and the United States. She has earned several prestigious awards, including the 2022 NCECA Emerging Artist and the Emerging Artist Award through Ceramics Monthly. Currently, Punch serves as a full-time creative ceramics faculty member at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand.

As a promising artist who continues to explore identity and uniqueness in her pottery, Punch is certainly someone to keep an eye on in the world of contemporary ceramics.
