DIY Air Dry Clay Horse Wall Decor
A simple, calming craft you’ll want to hang up right away
There’s something really grounding about making things with your hands — especially when it’s simple, slow, and leaves you with something sweet to hang on your wall.
This little horse wall piece is made from air dry clay, some string, and a bit of quiet time. It’s easy to customize, kid-friendly, and doesn’t require fancy tools. Just imagination, a few basic supplies, and maybe a bit of tea while you work.
What You’ll Need:
- Air-dry clay
- Template (hand-drawn or printed)
- Rolling pin
- A knife or clay tool
- String, thread, or yarn
- Acrylic paint
- Brushes
- Sandpaper

Step-by-Step:
1. Roll out your clay
Keep it around 0.5–1 cm thick — thick enough to hold shape, but light enough to hang.
2. Cut out your horse shape
Place your template on top of the clay and cut around it gently with a craft knife. Clean up the edges with your fingers or a bit of water.
3. Make a slit
Before the clay starts drying, use your knife to make a slit on the side where you want the string detail to go. This is where your thread will pass through later.
4. Let it dry
Air dry clay usually takes about 24–48 hours. Flip it over halfway through so it dries evenly.
5. Add paint (if you like)
You can keep it neutral and raw or go bold with colors. A soft pastel, terracotta, or even metallics look beautiful.
6. Add the string
Once it’s dry, thread your string through the slit you made earlier. You can tie knots, layer colors, or let it hang loose.
7. Hang it up
You can glue a loop of string or use a small nail to hang it on your wall.
Tips & Ideas:
- Use earthy tones for a boho look
- Add gold thread for a little sparkle
- Kids love this project — especially choosing their own thread colors
- Want to turn it into a unicorn? Just add a horn shape before it dries! 🦄
Final Thoughts
This horse wall piece is one of those projects that doesn’t ask for perfection — just a bit of time and attention. It’s a small object, but it adds warmth and handmade charm to any space. And it’s a reminder that making something slowly, with intention, is always worth it.
