They’re easy to make, beginner-friendly, and a lovely little project for kids and adults alike.

How to Make a Clay Bookworm
1. Roll out the clay
Use your rolling pin or bottle to flatten the clay until it’s about 1cm thick. You don’t want it too thin, since you’ll be adding a paperclip later.
2. Shape your worm
Cut out a simple wiggly shape. It doesn’t have to be perfect (in fact, the wonkier, the cuter!).
3. Smooth the edges
Use a damp finger or soft tool to smooth out the sides and surface.
4. Add the paperclip
Gently press the paperclip into the underside of your worm. This turns it into a bookmark that slides onto your page. Make sure it’s snug, but not so deep that it cracks through the top.
5. Let it dry
Air dry clay usually needs 24–48 hours. Flip it over halfway through so both sides dry evenly.
6. Paint and decorate
Use acrylic paint or markers to give your bookworm a face, stripes, spots — whatever you like!
7. (Optional) Seal it
If you want it to last longer or feel shiny, brush on a thin layer of resin or Mod Podge once the paint is dry.
