Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Create the Base
Roll out your clay to about 0.5 cm thick. Use the template to cut out the shapes you want to use. Smooth the edges with a damp brush or your fingers.
2. Build the Sides
Roll a clay strip about 3-4cm tall. Score the edge of the base and the bottom of the strip, apply slip, and attach it around the base.
To reinforce the inside, roll a thin coil of clay, press it into the corner where the wall meets the base, and blend it in until smooth.
3. Make the Lid
Use the template again for the for the lid. Roll a very thin strip of clay and attach it to the underside, just inside the edge — this creates a lip so the lid fits snugly on the box.
4. Add Personal Touches
Stamp a name or initials into the lid if you’d like. Then, shape a small flat guitar from clay and attach it to the top of the lid with slip.
5. Let It Dry
Let your box and lid dry completely, separately. Depending on humidity, this could take 24–48 hours. Make sure the lid doesn’t stick — separate it gently while still soft.
6. Sand & Smooth
Once dry, lightly sand the edges and surface with fine sandpaper for a clean, professional finish.
7. Paint It!
Use acrylic paints to bring your box to life! You can also use paint markers to add musical notes, fun borders, or band-inspired designs.
8. Seal the Surface
Finish with a clear acrylic sealer to protect the paint and give your box a polished look. Choose matte for a soft ceramic feel, or gloss for a shiny finish.
And there you have it!
Your very own handmade guitar pick box — unique, personal, and full of creative charm. Whether it’s sitting proudly on your shelf, holding your favorite picks, or wrapped up as a gift for a fellow music lover, this little clay creation is sure to hit the right note.
